Rain Gear

Equipment
Just curious to know what folks wear when bike commuting in the rain. What works and what doesn't, etc.

Raingear = Sandals.

Sandals.

Eliminating socks is the thing to do in rain. Shimano and Lake both make SPD-compatible sandals. The Lake sandal apparently uses a Shimano sole, but it's designed different from the Shimano sandal - the sole has a larger toe area and has a lip across the front. I find the Shimano sandal fits my foot better, but your foot may vary! The velcro straps on the Lake seemed to be more likely to pinch skin.

In NC, it's usually warm enough that I don't I don't find a need to do much different in rain - just avoid cotton (absorbs water). Cycling shorts and jerseys are great for sheding water. Tights keep road grit off your calves. I switch to wool in the winter. In the winter, I put on a light windbreaker on top of the jersey, a balaclava, full finger gloves and wool socks.

You might find an increased need for eye protection. I haven't figured out how to keep glasses from fogging up in the rain?

Many winter cyclists are finding that wool socks + waterproof (kayak style) boot liners + sandals and possibly an over bootie do the trick in cool weather.

rain gear

On warmer days, I wear a light rain jacket and a helmet cover. For cooler days, I wear a rain jacket over a cycling jacket, helmet cover, rain pants, water repellent gloves and shoe covers. These have always kept me warm and dry.
