Commuter Rail?

Do y'all know what the Charlotte/Mecklenburg plans are for "bikes on board" the proposed commuter rail?

Here in the Triangle, they're signing the contract to build the cars (Diesel Multiple Units) right NOW and it's my understanding that they plan to restrict bicycles to off-peak - an incredibly misguided policy for a agency that should be encouraging usage by bike commuters, as a bicycle increases the service of each station by a factor of at LEAST 2500%.

The restriction during peak hours is not unusual for light rail, especially early in its development. I believe that is what the Charlotte agency is planning as well. It is better than not having access at all, and hopefully as time passes the restriction will be eased. That is what has happened in other light rail communities. Once the rail is running and the restriction proves to be unnecessary, it is incumbent upon the cycling community to seek a change. Also, the rail operator should lessen the impact of peak hour restriction by providing ample secure bike parking at the stations.

bikes on rail

Charlottes light rail vehicles (LRV) will have bike hooks (like those in Portland, OR's LRVs). Don't know if they will restrict bikes to off-peak. Contact Andy Mock with Charlotte Area Transit System: amock@ci.charlotte.nc.us. He is assistant project manager for the South Corridor Light Rail Project.

Other transit technologies may be used on other CATS mass transit lines (diesel commuter trains, bus rapid transit, electric street cars, and more light rail). The plans for these are not far enough along yet to have determined bike accommodation policy/details.

Can you elaborate on your statistic about bicycle increasing service at each station? I believe this to be true, but am interested in where 2500% comes from. Sounds like a great factoid to have in one's back pocket.
