Help Pass the Bicycle Parking Ordinance!

General Topics

Charlotte City Council will hold its only public hearing on the proposed Bicycle Parking Ordinance at its monthly zoning meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 18 beginning at 6 PM. This is the fruition of a long, hard effort by the CDOT Bicycle Program staff. Please show City Council that you want this dream to become reality! Here's what you can do and what you need to know.

You can show your support by:
  • Calling or e-mailing your Council representatives (find out which members represent you here).
  • Attending the Jan. 18 Council meeting (location and parking information here; of course, there's also a good bike rack out front).
  • Speaking in support of the proposed ordinance (sign up in advance to speak; information here).

The ordinance will complement Charlotte's accomplishments creating bike routes and bike lanes, ultimately ensuring there's a convenient, secure place to park your bike when you get where you're going. The ordinance mandates that most new and modified developments provide short-term and, in many cases, long-term bicycle parking. It also encourages (but does not require) provision of showers and lockers.

A fact sheet with details is available here. The proposed ordinance text is also available in Adobe Acrobat format and Microsoft Word format.

If you choose to speak at the City Council meeting on behalf of the Bicycle Parking Ordinance, keep in mind that Council Members are business people and they relate well to other business people. Business attire is recommended. And Dan Faris of B.I.K.E.S. has recommended that we bring along our helmets. I hope to see lots of Charlotte bicycle commuters there. Alan Hunt.
