The Charlotte City Council unanimously adopted the proposed bicycle parking ordinance at its monthly zoning meeting, Monday, March 21. This is a great step forward for bicycle transporatation in Charlotte that will bear fruit at a measured pace. The new requirements apply to new projects or major changes of existing buildings; they do not impact existing buildings. The new ordinance is not a stand-alone document, but an amendment to existing requirements for off-street parking. The previous ordinance established a variety of different categories of building (retail, offices, banking, etc.) and specified automobile parking requirements for each category. The bicycle parking amendment adds two additional parking quotas for most building categories: short-term bicycle parking and long term bicycle parking. It also defines specific requirements for each type of bicycle parking. Details are available here: |
