I would liek to ride to work but I am trying to determine the best route from Concord, (LMS) to the coliseum area. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Others who may be "listening in" on this exchange may be interested to know that I was able to get with "tweaver" and that, after a Saturday "shake-down cruise" two weeks ago, the two of us commuted into Charlotte together for the first time today (Friday, May 27, 2005). It's been a very positive experience for both of us, and I just wanted folks to know that this site was a good place for us to be put in touch with each other to begin with. Anyone else thinking of commuting from Kannapolis/Concord? Feel free to contact one of us!

A bit north of you, but I had a few comments to add about my route, which I take about once a week to the Charlotte Rescue Mission, located at West 1st Street and Cedar. I get on Hwy.29 South, and on the way southward I take a left at Pavilion and follow that to Hwy.49. I take Hwy.49 to University Place, cutting through that little shopping area on the left and back road rather than take the left at the light further down, but either way, getting onto Old Concord Road. As other directions here already specify, I take Old Concord to North Tryon, turn left, and proceed south into downtown Charlotte. My only concern about this route is the traffic along North Tryon, which is rather intimidating even at 6:30 or 7:00 a.m., and just south of the intersection with Old Concord Road, there are drainage grates running parallel with the road over a 1/4-mile stretch, extremely dangerous to cyclists. Finally, on my northbound route in the afternoons, I have decided to take Hwy.49 to left at Morehead in Harrisburg, which comes out at LMS and Hwy.29 north to home. Hwy. 49 is a good deal less hilly than 29. The hill north of LMS is much more rewarding northbound than southbound!
Hope this addition is helpful to you. I think we need more input from cyclists about north Mecklenburg commuting routes.

consider driving & biking or busing and biking

You may want to consider driving or taking the bus for part of your route. I find many of the roads around LMS to be too busy and too fast for pleasant commuting. You could drive part of the way and then park and ride the rest of the way. Once you're closer to town there are many options.

On the "Forum" link above there are a couple of UNCC to Uptown routes that may help with part of your trip.

Route from Concord

There are a couple of bike commuters who ride from Concord and Harrisburg who may be able to help. I'll ask them to respond to this query.
