The Basics

BCMP helps you with advice, support, and assistance, but you must provide the equipment you need to ride comfortably and safely to work. You must furnish:

A bicycle in good working order (BCMP does not provide mechanical assistance).

A bicycle helmet approved by CPSC or Snell.

A bike lock.

A front light and rear reflector or light if you're riding before sunrise or after sunset.

We highly recommend several other items.

Eye protection.

Cycling gloves.

Reflective material or flashing lights on your person or bag.

Panniers, messenger bag, or backpack.

And it's prudent to be prepared for the unexpected.

Noise maker – bell, horn, whistle on lanyard.

Repair kit (see suggestions here).

Clothing

Year 'round garments:

Wind/rain shell (hiking/biking jacket; brightly colored or reflective; breatheable i.e., Goretex or similar).

Spandex shorts or tights.

Wicking base layer (under armor or similar; short sleeve, long sleeve or both).

Additional items for those of us who ride in colder weather:

Insulator (fleece; vest or full).

Balaclava, skull cap, or helmet cover.

Booties or foot insulation.

Repair Kit

The easiest way to deal with a flat tire or mechanical problem is to take advantage of the bike racks on all CATS buses, but a small tool kit isn't a bad idea if you've got far to ride. Some of our favorite items:

Pump (CO2 or manual).

Bike tube.

Patch kit.

Tire levers.

Allen wrench set or bike multi-tool (Alien or similar).

Master link (for chain).

Shop rag or shopping bag to hold tools and parts during repairs.
